Military Workout For Fitness
The military workout format is popular these days... there might even be a military boot camp class in your town.
Without a doubt, performing a military workout will improve fitness... but taking on this challenge should not done lightly.
A military workout is designed to get you in the best all around shape... meaning it will effect EVERY physical ability making up fitness.
A military workout is NOT comprised of doing some gym machines and then sitting around drinking water and chatting with your friends.
A military workout is NOT about “finding your center” like in yoga class... although you will definitely learn what you are made of!
A military workout is NOT about relaxed breathing like in Pilates... actually your breathing will be replaced by huffing and puffing!
The military workout format is about getting you in the best shape of your life and improving the your ability to do many things well.
What You Should Expect
A military workout is usually performed outdoors, and involves bodyweight calisthenics, running, obstacle course and stretching.
You will undoubtably perform movements in a military workout that you wouldn’t in a gym setting... like climbing, crawling and carrying.
Yes, you’ll have to brave the elements... no air conditioned carpeted rooms with music playing in the background, no juice bar and no incense burning.
Your leader will usually be inventive... making things up as they go, using the things they find in the environment like hills, tree branches and rocks.
Every class will most likely be different in a military workout... not as structured as a gym workouts.
In my opinion, a military workout can be fun, challenging and above all else... productive. No whining allowed!
How To Prepare For A Military Workout
You will soon learn that your gym workouts of machine circuits and running on the treadmill did little to prepare you for a military workout.
You may even start to question the effectiveness of the gym workout, especially when your pumped up muscles and “target heart rate” aerobic training leaves you gasping for air in agony on the side of the road.
While a good instructor will push you (not try to kill you)... I suggest preparing for a military workout before you sign up for a class.
If you’re doing the “traditional” gym workout of resistance training and aerobic conditioning... you’re going have to crank up the intensity in order to prepare.
Bodyweight calisthenics and running are a must.
For the best results, mix bodyweight calisthenics and interval training.
With a little preparation, a military workout is not something to be feared... but enjoyed.
And when you see your physical abilities improve, feel better than you have in years and look your best... you might just cancel that gym membership once and for all.
